there are a lot of things that sounded outright ridiculous but I do think that smoking marijuana would be less injurous to health than tobacco (but who the hell said it is "beneficial"). And it is true that dupont did lobby for hemp to be banned including the non-narcotic hibisicus cannabiscus for which the ban was lifted only recently.
